Cat5e installation cost
#1
Hello. I've been given the task of costing out a proposed cabling exercise.
Is there a tried and tested method of calculating the average cost of installing CAT5 points, other than working out individual component prices? How do contractors charge? Anything else I need to consider?

There are many ways to skin a Cat5e point
I will happily advise you, just let me know. Alot of people will only cost for socket, cable and panel - forgetting about cabinets, containment and testing.

I'm soon going to need to cable up around 200 points. Anyone care to quote me for supplying materials?
Faceplates, sockets, cable (reckon on 10 boxes @ 305 metres), panels, 2 x 800x800 racks (full height) etc. (no wallboxes needed)
email details to: cat5@mdbgroup.co.uk
Thanks

Cost is reliant on the type of building routing etc. around £28-£30 would be an open plan office with high outlet concentrations and raised floor.
There was a company around a couple of years ago who advertised £28.50 per cable, then when they got their foot in the door you discovered that all this included was about 30m of cable and a faceplate. Then they would add wall boxes, trunking, patch panels, cabinets etc and come out more expensive than the rest of us. Don't hear much about them these days
If your installing yourself I would recommend Cat 5E as Cat 6 is a lot more sensitive to bend radius and termination technique. Also Gigabit to the desk is generally enough for most offices.
You really also want to get it properly tested, not just continuity but a proper fluke tester or similar. If its not tested it's not a cable as far as I'm concerned
