I have a gut feeling that you probably haven't got any ROMs.
If you have, all you need to do is unzip the MAME executable somewhere, and then put the ROMs in the ROMs directory and run the MAME executable.
What you will probably find is that the ROMs are the hardest part to track down if you want a full set. There are official distributors around that will supply a full set of ROMs for you.
The ROMs are basically the machine code from the arcade machine that contain the games. The MAME executable contains all the emulation of the system hardware for each machine type.
Also, get hold of a copy of MAME32 as it provides a front end and a shed load of other options that let you navigate and run your games a lot easier than the command line version.

Could someone give me a good explaination on how to run an MAME emulator on a PC with XP.
I have downloaded the 074b version and cannot get it to work.
If possible idiot guide would be ideal as I have tried to the best of my spastic computing ability.

I have downloaded about 10 ROM's and they are in the correct directory. I just cannot get the MAME programme to run.
Have tried opening MSDOS window and running using basic commands but no joy.
Will download MAME32 as you suggest.
