Err not too sure but if you do put them outside might be an idea to run them through some conduit. Saying that the majoroty of people have cable running from tv aerial outside and then into the house.

Can you not hide the cables under the carpet or in the false skirting board can now buy if have say wooden floors ?

What about the wireless transmitter / receiver ?

Richard

You could plug an access point directly into your modem/firewall/router fing?

Odd suggestion, have you tried go through the beam from above, ie go down instead of up? I often put a part of cable down through where I'm trying to go, then tape the end to the cable I want to route and pull it back.

they're not designed for it and will degrade over time, but I can't see you have many problems for a few years.

I know of a few customers from my old work who ran a few cables CAT5 outside to some portacabins. They were going strong after 4-5 years.

You could just go wireless.

Agree with Ozzy m8, no real problems with running the cables outside, especially if your sensible and put it in sensible places so that it is out of the attention of the weather, but to all intense purposes they're gonna be water proof and getting wet wont affect your signal.

The other point is, defo go wireless m8, it aint as complicated as it seems. And it's really cheap now, access points can be purchased for as little as 50-60 quid, notebook wireless cards are dead cheap and PCI cards aren't that bad either. It's not very different from setting up a normal 'wired' network.

I've tried putting the cable between the one wall I need to go through, but theres a beam at the top so I can't access the cavity from above.. don't think I can go that way without causing loads of damage....
Unfortunately can't afford wireless at the moment, plus i've got an expensive all in one modem/router/firewall which I'd rather keep..

ho hum..

You could just use Category 5e cable that has a UV stabilised Polyethylene jacket This is suitable for aerial use or just clipping to your external wall. It can also be used in dry ducts. For wet ducts you would need a gel-filled version.

If you want some let me know.
