Question

Hello,

I want to take MSN Messenger off the start bar on bottom of the screen. How do I do it, and how do I put it back if neccessary? Also, will this stop the annoying pop-ups? Its on Windows XP pro.

Cheers

Thumbs up

Soulgirl,

Thanks .

But before I do it, what exactly am I doing and what does it do? Does that thing just take it off the start menu bar? Or remove it completely? Can I still open it up? I just want to stop it automatically running everytime I turn the PC on. Also once I paste that command in how do I (if necessary) return it to how it is now?

Thanks again

Can't you just right-click and 'remove' ? To put it back again you can just drag an icon there. No need to go entering commands like that.

stevencotton,

Right click the MSN icon? When I do that it doesnt give me a "remove" choice. Closest is "exit", but I think it still runs in the background? Also, the icon returns when you turn off/on PC.

Cheers

Sorry mate it was best guess, I'm sitting in front of a iMac and an E450 You don't need to go editing the registry though (although that will work), it's Windows.

In Messenger, go to Tools / Options / General, and uncheck "Automatically run Messenger when I log onto Windows"

Ernie,

1. Removing Windows Messenger will NOT prevent the pop-ups, these come to you courtesy on the Messenger Service which is unrelated to Windows/MSN Messenger. To stop them, you need to:
a) Start > Run type SERVICES.MSC and click OK
b) Scroll down until you find Messenger
c) Right Click it, choose Properties
d) Click on Stop
e) Select Disabled from the Startup type dropdown.
f) OK/Apply
g) Close the Window.

2. The fact you are getting these pop-ups at all shows that you are not using a firewall or it is not set up correctly. At the very least, enable the windows firewall (go to Network Connections, right click the one you use to connect to the internet, choose Properties. Click advanced and tick the box at the top titled "Protect my computer......." ) However, you would be better installing a decent firewall ZoneAlarm is one of the more popular - this link is to the free version.

3. The best way to stop MSN Messenger from starting automatically is to remove it (using Soulgirls instructions) then download/install MSN Messenger from http://messenger.msn.com. Although technically there are differences between Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger, I have yet to find out what the differences are and to the layman they work in identical ways.

Edit to add - Once you install MSN Messenger, you can choose how you want it run - manually or automatically by opening it, going to Tools > Options > General tab. Clear first and third ticks to only load on demand.

HTH

mj, to remove it totally, follow the instructions given by Soulgirl above. Make sure MSN is not open, or removal will fail.

With my command it will not be removed if you have outlook or your IE running either... bloody crappy 5hite... I removed it completely as I use trillian so can log into MSN from that if I need to.

Oh yeah, forgot to add that bit.

Will fail if any program is running etc., that might, by any stretch of the imagination have the remotest possibility of needing, wanting or was designed (knowingly or otherwise) to need or use Windows Messenger.
