World Internet Speed?

I am not sure if this should go in the computer related section, so apologies.
I was just wondering what internet connections are available for home users. I know in england that 2mb connections seem to be the highest offered by telewest and bt. And in Belgium they have over 3mb but what does the rest of the world have?

There is no real maximum. I used to do contract work for Nortel (build switches for everyone in telco) who had a lab running test protocols on WAN links at 128GB. As this was in 1999 I assume things are now a bit quicker.
Funny thing was at that stage their LAN was still 10 MB.
A 'max' speed is usually detrmined by cost. If you want a really quick connection BT will throw in a 64Meg leased line for a couple of hundred grand. (At least.... That is the installation fee they quoted us last year for a Belfast-Dublin link)

Are we talking broadband or leased lines? If you have the money then you can go stupidly fast. Not that there is any point as you would never be able to use the bandwidth because somewhere over the net will have a smaller pipe or will limit your bandwidth.
Most big companies in the UK have E3 (34mb) or T3 (45mb) tops. Anything bigger and you are talking STM1 which is small ISP capacity. Plus unless your running Gigabit Ethernet there is no point as fast ethernet is only 100mb.
I also swear Ive read that someone in the US has run at 1 terabyte (1024 gb).
Simon.

My mate has a 10mbit connection (up and down) at home. Thats the quickest home connection I have seen.
My college has an OC3 connection. Not sure of the exact speed. Capped at about 40mbit I would guess at
