Hi,
Hope somebody can help me out on this. I have lost the administrator account on my laptop that I use for work, It's running XP Pro and when I'm not using it I have the fax line plugged in to receive faxes.

I'd leave it with the lid closed and it used to do the job nicely but then began to shut itself off. So I thought it must be some setting somewhere and started playing around in Control Panel, possibly in Admin Tools. After that I've lost the Admin account I've tried installing hardware to open the account option but if I enter the password, it's rejected.

Can anyone help in the ressurrection or ia Adminicide a hanging offence?

Thanks
gerry

you can't generally delete an admin account. I was going to type a 10 pager on how to hack out a corrupt one but I am pished, so it would probably break you PC. I'll try on Monday if I sober up

Thanks Fast Bloke and I probably wouldn't understand either
I was beginning to think that with no responses to the request I'd totally screwed it or it was too stupid for words. It just no longer starts up with the option for the Admin account.

Look forward to Monday (Can't believe I just wrote that)

Question

Do you have another account with admin privs? If so, so it still give you access to everything or does if give you lowly user status?

Oh dear - I think you may be fubared. On the bright side - It is probably not anything that you did. To screw it up this completely requires a computer

SAM files located at in the (System32/config/SAM) stores all the passwords (in deep encryption) for NT, 2000, XP.

Make a boot disk (make a NTFS boot disk that reads of NTFS hd if you have one) and copy that file called "SAM".

Look on the internet to find a tool to decrypt it. Should take couple of Hrs to couple of days. Anyway good luck with that

Hi Soulgirl,
Unfortunately you're assuming 'some knowledge' big mistake, with me, I'm afraid

If there's a simple laymans explanation to that, I'd be grateful

I had to 'break into' a computer at work that we didnt know the password to.

Use a program called CHNTPW, it nulls the administrator password for you.

You can find all you need here - http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html

I can confirm that this worked fine for me against Windows XP and Windows 2000.

Good luck
