I have the opportunity of purchasing a 1.7GHz pc from work. My concern is that it has a Xeon processor.
Will this processor run any OS (W2k or XP) and be fully games compatible in the way that a PIII or P IV would be?

of course it is. Usually find Xeon processors in servers.
Have a look
here on the Intel site for more info.

Same as normal Pentium chip, just with shed loads more cache. It will be better than a normal one and cost about 3 times more.

They don't always have more cache.
Out so called top of the range IBM servers have 4 P4 xeon processors but they onyl habe 512kb cache each... cost a damn fortune as well
