Anyone got a smallish hard drive that they do not need ?

Need something 10-20Gb for my dads PC as the two 10's that I have seem to make it take ages to boot.

If you don't have one, any idea what is causing the slow boot ?
It won't autodetct the drive in the bios (F3) & when entered manually makes the PC stall for about a minute at the bios drive detection stage Bit of a PITA.

My dads a tight git, so the cheaper the better please

Specs . . .
K7S5A Pro
Athlon 1.1Ghz
256 PC2100 DDR Ram
GeForce MX200

Thanks

Cheers guys. Jojo - Not upgraded the bios yet, its a new mobo, but probably worth a go anyway.

Dom - There is one CD-RW and one DVD-Rom drive on the secondary IDE and the HDD is the master in the primary (on its own). It detects the CD-RW & DVD rom instantly. Reckon its still worth a go ? Or maybe try connecting the HDD to the secondary and booting from that ?
Had exactly the same problem when I tried the HDD on a standard K7S5A too

Thanks for the help so far

ive got a k7s5a and had no problems apart from a conflict with a netgear network card...is there a netgear attached at all? it prevents detection of cd drives or hard drives....

Nope, no NIC installed just yet. Only installed the drive and the gfx card so far.

I'll try removing the drives on IDE1 to see if that helps first.

Anything else worth trying ?

Sounds like a plan Been nothing but grief this machine First mobo was shafted, no ports worked or anything ! Second is looking to be the same. Must be drive related.

In the bios do you have smart turned on ... if so and these discs are old that may have an impact.

Dave.

Not yet mate. Got 2 of the same Western Digital Caviar drives and they both do it. Just ordered myself another (third ) 120Gb drive for mine so I'll try my old 40Gb one I'm replacing in it and hopefully it'll sort it

Its Win98SE Chris. Once it gets past the POST it runs fine.

Yep, using 80 strand IDE cables Drive set to Master - Maybe try Cable Select ?

I'll try booting it on IDE1 when I get home and also try removing the other drives from the equation.

Failing that it looks like I'll have to donate my 40Gb drive

Thanks for everyones help and suggestions
