IP Config ..... WTF ?
#2
Don't see why it needs a fresh install. The machine in question clearly has two networking adapters -- one on-board (the nVidia one) and one via a network card (the 3com one). Make sure you connect the crossover cable to the port you've configured!
Then just configure them as 192.168.0.1 (mask 255.255.255.0) and 192.168.0.2 (mask 255.255.255.0). Make sure you bind TCP/IP to the correct adapter and you should be laughing. If you want one to act as an internet gateway, you'll have to configure it as the default gateway on the other one. Check it's working by typing "ping 192.168.0.1" from the one with the .2 address, and the other way round.
Alternatively, if time is of the essence and you just want them to talk to each other (rather than one acting as a gateway to the internet), try installing IPX/SPX on them as it doesn't need any configuration.
Make sure you have "File and Printer Sharing" enabled or you won't be able to see anything on the other box!
PS: Strictly you shouldn't use 255.255.0.0 as the subnet mask, as 192.168.0.0/16 is actually a block of 256 class C addresses, not a single class B. Not that it matters with CIDR...

it's executing then quitting straight away. type cmd or command into the Run box and you'll get a lovely little command prompt to run ipconfig from. You'll now be able to read what it tells you!
ipconfig -all gives you loads of info.

Is there a difference between....
3com 3C920B-EMB Intergrated Fast Ethernet Controller
and a
NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking adapter.
Just wondering if I maybe plugged the crossover cable into the wrong port?

OK work people
Throw me some numbers to enter into both Lappy and Desktop.
I have sourced my ISP's DNS server addy's so I can do that side of things.
I have also removed and re-installed the Lan connections on the Desktop, so they are blank now too
Subnets on both machines I have set to 255.255.0.0
Just need some suitable # to put in the gateway and ip boxes.
Cheers folks.
found a neat way round it earlier today though (as temp measure)
Firewire 400 Mbps

Cheers for that Carl.
David and I had a go at getting them to talk this morning but I had to leave. and it was left unsolved.
Sorry for the confusion over the re-install / network adapters.
It's the Desktop that has two adapters.
It's the laptop that I re-installed the O/s... well I say re-installed it was actually changed from XP home edition to XP pro.
The desktop is running Pro and as David and I found out this morning, home ed is a bit more of a pig to work with... hence running out of time.
Then again It could just be me being a dum ****.

OK understood most of that.
changed 255.255.0.0 to 255.255.255.0 on both machines. (keeps everyone happy )
and set desktop to 192.168.0.1
and laptop to 192.168.0.2
Not so confident on the gateway settings.
It's the Desktop that will be the host and connected via dial up to the net.
It's the laptop that will need to route through there.
I was hoping by setting the DNS server address to that of my ISP in the laptop it would of enabled it to find the net !....
Do I need to set a bridge connection somewhere?

the plot thickens
Pinging the laptop from the desktop results in all four packets being tranfered (0% loss) in 2ms.
The other way round results in four time outs (100% loss)
Is that because no gateway perameters are set yet ?

Since letting it change my settings to try and configure the ICS.
I'm now completely lost as it's changed the settings back to auto configured... greyed out and it still does not work..
Back to basics I think.
All I want the dam things to do is;
Let lappy connect to net via LAN crossover cable, through Desktop dial up connection.
Transfer files both ways via LAN cable via shared folders.
Can't be that hard surely
