How many times have the tapes been used?

Do you have another drive you can test the tapes in.

#1 Suspect has to be media, unless they are brand new out of the wrapper tapes.

Deffo #1 thing to try is media. Can't you get a brand new tape and dump large file to that during the day?

If the tape backup fails with the new tape then there's lots of time to get an engineer out to fix the drive before bed time..
