Question

The *******... apart from actually paying these ar$eholes for their s/w, what other freebie packages are there to prevent their silly pop-ups?

I've got Adaware and Spybot already... and am running Norton Firewall 2003...

All they are doing is expoliting the 'Messenger' service within Windows XP/2000 (not to be confused with MSN Messenger). It is a total scam, that relies on people's ignorance to succeed.

Microsoft has a page explaining how to turn off the Messenger service. They do note that by disabling this, you might stop some legitmate services, such as AV updates. Personally, I've had the service diabled for ages and it hasn't stopped my AV updates, so I would take that with a pinch of salt!

If any anti-virus stuff makes use of messenger I'd be very suprised... But anything's possible.

As Chris says, just disable the service.
