Yes, you misread my statement. I'm referring to the professional industry. Music and recording/mixing. Personally, I don't agree with P2P stuff. I get royalties from music, so I don't like (but accept that it happens) piracy and copyright infringement. Cuts down on my moolaaa
However, back to the subject of Macs, you said that the Mac has a small user base. I'll back down and say, in comparison to the general population of computer users (PC),yes, but I would like to say that Macs are just as versatile, Bill Gates/Steve Jobs signed a deal many moons ago that lets the Mac tolerate Microsoft packages , so you've got the specialist software and the generic stuff too and more importantly, the reliablity...
The Mac has a very large, but specific user base - media, graphics, video and music. Also, the Mac is still relatively unknown in the UK (and Europe) - it's main area is the USA.

Thats it.
I am now one of those people who thinks Macs are better than PC's... Waaay better in fact. I've almost always used PC's in the past for all of my work but just started a new job where Mac usage was required full time and I can't get over how good they really are using OSX.
Got to go buy me a new G5 now for home, mmmm G5

None of that! Macs have their place alongside PC's.
I bought Macs for home because
a) They look fantastic and I love the design
b) Easy to use
c) Awesome for pics, webstuff and movies and mp3's
d) Great, easy to use free software
e) They look great ;-)
Have no regrets whatsoever and would heartily recommend them to people who want something a little different but IMHO, much better. Each to their own though so no slagging!!

I use em (heavily) for professional music - main reason is purely because of reliablity. In 12 years of Mac use, can't really remember the last time it crashed. Yes, they're more expensive. You get what you pay for. The new G4s and G5s are much more powerful that the PCs to Also, don't get any virus attacks
No, they don't have as much general software, but the specialist stuff is much more important.
I still have a PC, but for the non-professional aspects of life - games, internet and word-processing.
PCs - pah, bl00dy glorified electric typrewriters!!!!!

I wouldn't **** on a PC if it was on fire.
I personally believe Windoze is repsonsible for one of the biggest slow downs in innovation seen in the last 100 years.
I'd also like to see the huge disrumption cause to the global economy when
As to software there is a stack of Mac software and plenty of Mac only SW thats why most publishers use Macs and would not even consider using a PC. Loads of freeware too like on a PC.
I used to be 100 PC through and through and thought Macs were for freaks and hippies but they are just easier to use, more relibale, faster etc. Quality costs. If you want something dull, slow , mundane, sell your Scoobs and buy a Mondeo !

Is it not just a matter of time before Macs are open to virri infection too? Is it because there are so few users in comparison to PC users? Im not stating anything here, just wondering if that is the case.

Steve, your not adding weight to your argument... thats almost like saying "soulgirl is the greatest" without substantiating the reasons why.
Come on.. lets have a virtual competition... why is a Mac better than a PC:

Fair enough, my comment was in jest - but it also holds true, for me.
I'm 'reasonably' advanced when it comes to IT, that holds me in good stead with operating systems. I know a few, especially Unix.
I hated Macs once, slow, looks pretty but didn't really do much, apart from Photoshop. I could do the same on any old Windows machine, but Windows is way too fat and unstable and in the past few years, far too easy to exploit I have seven computers at home currently, only one runs Win2k, purely for my palm pilot and camera.
I'm a power user, I can really kick the crap out of a computer. I like stuff that's stable but easy to use. Sure, being a sysadmin and developer I can pretty much do what I like on a unix machine, and with an open source OS if I don't like it I can change it. But who can be arsed doing it more than once?
I just want something easy to use and reliable as a desktop. Wasn't until six months ago I'd used OS X. Runs a BSD variant, so I already know it. I'm not a games player so that doesn't worry me, apart from Quake I've not played anything on my iMac. I also have an iPod, and iTunes is brilliant. I plan on getting a PowerBook next month too.
Works for me

You also have to bear in mind that the main reason why PCs are hacked and subject to viruses is because of the one thing that most of the world's IT-literate populate hate -
Microsoft and Bill Gates
Too much of a monopoly and all that.....
Macs are also percieved as cool - bit like the PSX and so forth... why damage something that's cool. Plus also bear in mind that OSX is UNIX-based (pretty bombproof then....)
Or that's what a hacker told me a few months ago.....

The only reason there aren't so many virus attacks on Mac's is because there aren't that many Mac's I think the hackers feel sorry for you so leave you alone

Most "hackers" (which is the wrong term, cracker is the one) are kids running rootkits that have zero idea what they are doing.
I know of people that have sat there watching a kid type in DOS commands once he rootkitted a UNIX machine
Lots of people are unhappy with Microsoft but Windows is also the most popular and easy to exploit. People don't compromise single hosts unless they are kids, there's no point. Unix is used in most servers on the Internet, when was the last time you heard of a Unix virus? Is that because they feel sorry for them?
There is always the iTunes Music Store if you want to download music, but it's probably a music P2P you're after is it? I don't use those, but you could run one under Virtual PC.
Steve.

Erm... Hackers write trojans to "hack" something.. crackers decompile code and rebuild it "cracked" so to speak.
Anyway - swing and roundabouts... lets call them script kiddies for now

Copy of WinNuke anyone ?
One of the big newspaper groups had reduced the number of Macs it had. leaving justy 20. When that latest worm virus hit these were the only machines that worked and saved them a fortune and the paper still got out on time.
The MS opperating system has so many security holes that its a paradise for those naughty people out there.
And don;t use the argument its more popular so it must be better, Nazism was quite poular in the 1930-40s and I don't think anyone thinks that was much cop.
Oh and G5s process 64bit vs 32bit for Intel. Thats like the size of a postage stamp vs the size of New York.

OK, yes, Windows can be fairly poor on the security side of things, but if you know what you are doing a lock down can be performed that makes it very difficult or indeed almost impossible to hack. Problem is that it isn't shipped in that form and the majority of users wouldn't have a clue where to start, although Win2003 has started to address this.
I would suggest the main reason you hear about security problems on the Windows platform is that the majority of the planet uses it. If 90% of the computers on the planet were Macs, you would hear lots more hacking and virus writing going on for that platform.
You just have to look at Netscape and IE. Once, Netscape was almost totally dominant and there were no end of security problems. IE got in on the game and once that became more dominant all attention was focused on it for security attacks.
I get a stack of security alerts everyday for most platforms and I would say that the number is pretty equally spread between Unix and Windows platforms.
I've used Macs, PCs and all manner of big iron (IMB, HP, Cray, SGI and NEC) for years. I simply use the tool most suitable for the job. There is no winner (well, except Bill Gates).
Anyway Allan, I've been running 64 bit Windows on my machine for a few months now
Cheers
Ian
