Ive just sold my monster laptop which was big and very heavy now I want something superlight and reasonably small (min 10.4 screen), what should I be looking for and what sort of money?

Toshiba Portege or Dell Latitude D range would be my choices. I don't like Sony laptops and the Dell and Portege laptops that I have used are

I had a sony picturebook (the first "mini" sony) and it was just ace. Not over powerfull (266, most then were around 400) but the size of a vhs cassette closed and the widescreen format worked really well.
Had to hand it back when I left that employer, but would have another in a heartbeat.

As a solely Acer reseller company since the early 90's if memory serves, I can with 100% confidence say go elsewhere for your laptop
