my archos mp3 players lcd screen and the manufacturers dont do parts, would i be able to get a generic lcd screen somewere of the right size and put that in?

You might be able to - got a link for the unit and I can have a look?

I've replaced LCD screens with VFD screens before now. Farnell or RS Electronics might be a good bet.

oh bum, it doesn't look like a standard 2x20 line. Depends if you're brave or not...

If you're brave, take the case off and see how the display is mounted to the PCB. If it has lots of connections then you're probably buggered. If its a row of 2x8 pins you may be in luck...
