How to Change a service startup type

The RPC service on my machine (WinXP) has been set to disabled (dont ask!)
I am unable to chnage this setting within Services as the Properties field does not display when selected.
Can i edit the registry to change the startup type to automatic? If so what do i change?
I have tried safe mode and MSCONFIG but to no avail!
Help please!
