Help configuring Microsoft ISA - proxy cache only

I've installed Windows 2000 server with ISA to evaluate (software is evaluation versions), but it's driving me demented
I've performed a bog-standard install of 2000 and applied SP1. I've then installed ISA and picked the Caching mode.
I haven't defined any rules, just left the config as is, but everytime I try to use it as a Proxy from a client I receive this error:-
HTTP 502 Proxy Error - The ISA Server denies the specified Uniform Resource Locator (URL). (12202)
Internet Security and Acceleration Server
I thought this maybe an authentication issue, so I simply enable 'basic authentication', although I have also tried getting the ISA server to prompt for authentication.
The 2000 server is installed in our NT4 domain as a simple member server, so no Active Directory is installed.
I've looked through the Microsoft and ISA server.org sites, but can't find anything simply on the caching configuration.
Any ideas?

Hi Puff,
No just the defaults are installed. I found a few default rules which I thought gave full access. e.g. there is an allow site and content rule which applies to all traffic, all destinations.
So you're saying that it's actualy locked down by default?

Thanks for the pointer Puff,
I've just added a new protocol rule (there wasn't any of these) to allow all protocols, all requests and all destinations.
I can now browse quite happily.
