Sony's profits plunge - PS2 not selling well

Which apparently isn't going to happen. I've heard talk on ign and such that it'll be early next year before sony's next console hits the mainstreet shops, and when it does it's only a PS2 with a few extra bits and bobs.
apparently sony (who already make a 53% loss per console sold but easily make the difference on advertising and game licences) can't drop the price of the PS2 any lower (which explains why it's been at £159/169 for ages) without shooting themselves in the foot.

The PS2, if it was priced just like any other gadget would be around £800.
PSX isnt the next console (PS3 due in 2005) it's a tivo style hard disc recorder that also contains broadband access and a cd writer for burning tracks on that you've downloaded. the PS2 inner workings have been sorted so its now all on one chip, which ias also going to be included in the box of tricks.
it looks very natty too.
there's going to be a smaller ps2 coming also similar to the PSone.

PSX here for those who havne't seen it
Although the PSX will use the existing PS2 chipset, it will offer some awesome new features too. Firstly, the PSX will contain a 120 GB hard drive - compare this to the 8 GB drive of the Xbox, and you can see that Sony mean business. Combine the massive hard disk with the PSX's ethernet connection and we can see mucho downloading going on (yeah - right!!!), whether it be games, movies, music, software... take your pick. 120 GB is a lot of space for a home console... sorry, entertainment unit. Must get used to that. It's no surprise that Sony are marketing the PSX as a high-end electronics product rather than a games console. In fact, the PSX will not be handled by SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment), but will fall under the control of Sony's Home Electronics Division.
The PSX will also house a TV tuner, meaning you can theoretically watch and record TV on your PSX. Cool, but there's more to come. The PSX will also come complete with a full-on DVD recorder, meaning you will be able to write to DVD, although what can be mastered has not yet been made clear. The machine will also be compatible with all DVD formats, meaning to all intents and purposes, the PSX is a bona fide DVD wonderbox. Considering your average DVD Writer for PC will cost around £200 (err... no, £71 on Ebuyer and falling!!), this looks to be a bargain, although it does raise questions on the price, more of which later.
