Cool

Just been reading some sites on warchalking following on from a previous thread and it looks quite interesting. Now, not that id ever do something like this but does anybody know all the hardware i will need apart from a laptop. Will a normal wireless card do the job?

Most wireless pcmia cards should be OK. Although I think the best ones are made by Orinoco.
To find the access points you can download a copy of Netstumbler.
A good web site for any more info and a list of free access points goto www.consume.net/ .

From what i can see from some articles ive been looking at, the detection bit seems fairly simple. Now if you were of the naughty person type and wanted to utilise one of these insecure networks what would the next step be?

Just get a card and camp outside my house, don't tell NTL. If you have a canal boat feel free to park at the front.

What would happen if some Rosey & Jim canal boater parked up and started browsing paedophilia on your connection. Then wham bam, Officer Dibble at your door. It's just not worth the hassle.

Unhappy

I'd then assist in catching and prosecuting them. The charge would be for - correct me if I'm wrong - 'Making' which includes display on screen and storage, I don't believe it includes transmission via a wireless network. Same way as your public library wouldn't be charged if their machines were used illegaly.
