AVI file why won't it play??

i downloaded a film off the net and it won't play on any of my movie players(realplayer etc) could it be that the film is a dud of do i need to get another program to play it? if so what would you recomend?
could it be that because i have'nt finished downloading the second disc that it won't play?

Go here click codec packs in downloads menu (left side second group) then click k lite download pack, this will also have a little program called gspot in it which tells you what compression .avi file is

cheers for the replys guys. so i've downloaded the k-lite codec pack, what do i do now? sorry for being stupid just a bit new to all this. the help file that comes withe the program doe'nt realy explaine much . i ran the file through the gspot oo er mrs and it said file rendered succesfuly. what do i do now?

I asked a similiar thing here a while ago, and people recommended G-Spot http://www.headbands.com/gspot/.
It tells you if the AVI is valid and what codec is required.
If you have downloaded it from Kazza, and it is a recent movie, there have been lots of fakes on there recently. All you get is 600mb of nothingness.
