hey, you just answered your own question

I think ME is a watered down/home ( but not very well done ) version of 2KPro -

Theres a few ways of saving your data, it depends on what hardware you have access to and what type of data you want to save, docs, email, pics etc are straightforward, game saves can be a bit trickier.

You need to give more info on what kind of errors you are seeing, what type of stuff you want to save, and the spec of your PC etc.

just burn your data to a CDR and then install a fresh copy of w2k or xp. a fresh install of the OS is always good.

Thumbs up

Yup - back the important stuff onto CDR (don't forget to export your Outlook addresses and Favourites!)

Install XP and FORMAT your HD.....

Windows ME was a poorly b@stardized version of 98se and W2K......

Couldn't wait to get it off my PC......

'rubbing Windows ME'

Why does the image that gives me fill me with dread and wish to report paul to some sort of self abuse helpline

Have to say i hope the person that sells pc's to paul is feeling guilty, its somewhat akin to american settlers selling rifles to the red indians

Don't think for a second that ME has anything to do with W2K, other than parts of the interface. It's basically a ponced-up 98, and is about as far-removed from the NT-bases OSes (NT/W2K/XP) as Windows 3.1. I agree with the comment above, too - it's certainly the worst OS MS have ever produced.

I would suggest you upgrade to XP Pro ASAP - or if you've got a reliable enough mechanism to back up your data, clean-install the machine with XP. You won't be disappointed.

If I was you I'd buy another Hard drive ( I got a new 120 gig H/D for £90) Back up all you data into a folder on the old Hard drive, mount the two together with the new one as the master. Load XP or WIN2K, with multiple partions on the new Hard disk and once running import all your important data and email / favouites, etc into the new O/S.

The machine will fly with a new install, and you can load all the data at your leisure....You can never have enough hard drive space IMHO Also, if anything should go wrong then you can remove the new hard disk, change a jumper and you can boot from the old hard drive. Easy option

Thanks for your advice guys !
Looks like the operating system will have to go !
The spec of the computer is AMD-(K6)tm 3D with 152 RAM & 9.3gig hard drive
Is this ok for standard use or do I need to change the lot ?
cheers

If it is just being used for e-mail/web browsing that spec should be fine.
