just using |\'/ and the like, if you need other characters and hold down the alt key while entering the ascii code like ©À©¤©à¨b¨c¨^ etc. etc.

Blimey, this reminds me of IRC in 1993. Figlet is a program you can use to do that. banner(1) does/did it on UNIX-like machines too, although not quite the same.
