Question

Running XP with my trusty Zoltrix 56k modem (untouched from the factory), I am now getting a connection speed of either 42 / 44 or sometimes 115.2kbps!!

How?

Seems quicker, but can't be so - can it?

Is there anyway to check if this reading is true

BTW - I'm on freeserve anytime

Seems most likely that that is the computer->modem interface (assuming it's not a card type) - you can run that as fast as you like, and should because..

The other possibility is that most 56k modems will do compression on the line, so could, depending on circumstances get more than 56k of apparent (uncompressed) data rate. Doubt that rate would be shown on the fly tho, or that it would be a nice even number as you're reporting.

- Mark.
