As I understand it a well sorted case with good heatsink, and multiple fans in & out, will get your CPU into the low-mid 30's when idle. My case which has stock non-clocked AMD 2500XP cpu heatsink and fan, with no additional case fans except what's on the PSU sits at about 40-55 degrees, dependent on level of abuse (games).

Which processor?

Is that idle I.e when it's doing nothing, or just after you've been playing a game.

Cool

The Pentium 4 M 1.7 GHZ in my laptop runs at 58°C. You can use a program like Sandra Pro to give you feedback+advice on your CPU temperature. From what I can gather 48°C is pretty normal.

Mine's been up to 54c the past week or so in the humid weather when crunching United Devices research data
On a normally cool day UD crunching gets it to around 49/50c

My AMD 2100 as standard put in about 37C, overclocked it sits at about 55C. I believe it's only really when you start hitting 70C that you should be worring.

Still, if you are concerned, it's a good excuse to buy a new whizzy heatsink and fan
