Never had any problems with our Toshiba Tecras. But the Sony Vaio we had was nothing but problems. We didn't even use it in the end as it was so bad.

I'm thinking of buying one, probably a GRV616S.
Anoyne had one? What are they like for parts/support/reliablilty etc. Was gonna buy a Tosh, but the Sony spec is better £ for £
Also anyone know about the new Centrino processor, clock speeds are lower at around 1.5Ghz, but they seem to be claiming better performance than e.g. a P4 with 2.4Ghz (according to a meaningless graph on the Intel site) I know they have much better battery life, but it's gonna be pretty much house bound so not bothered about weight and battery life.
Cheers

For the money you spend on a Sony you could buy a well built, well sorted Dell.
Take a look at the Dell D600. Cracking laptop that has won a few magazine awards already.

I've got a GR414SP and it's sweet as a nut
Only downside maybe that, in the event of a repair being necessary, they apparently do not have any laptop service centres in the UK.
That said, had zilch problems since I bought it

I don't like the Sonys personally but they do the job well and have some nice features. Good if you have other Sony kit. I used a new ThinkPad today and that felt really well put together. Shame the OS wasn't
Not fancy a PowerBook?

I would go for an Apple as I used to use them a lot and the laptops were always excellent in my experience, but although this is mainly a toy (or a means of writing off corporation tax ) I will need support for Windows networks, and I don't want to run an emulator. Plus I'll get some funny looks pluging it into someones Windows network.
Oh yeah - one more question - do the Sony's have an S-video out to plug it into the projector?

Changed my mind now. Got more info on the Centrino. Sounds like you can have your cake and eat it. Hmmmm.........
This new high performance CPU and associated chipset has lower clock speed for reduced power requirements but is as powerful as a full size Intel Pentium P4 CPU Below is the Centrino clock speed and the equivalent P4 clock speed
Intel Centrino 1.3GHz = Pentium P4 2GHz
Intel Centrino 1.5GHz = Pentium P4 2.2GHz
Intel Centrino 1.6GHz = Pentium P4 2.5GHz
CPU Mobile Intel® Centrino Technology
Intel® Pentium® M processor 1.6GHz with 1024KB L2 Cache and supporting Enhanced Intel® SpeedStep® Technology
Intel® 855PM chipset; 400MHz processor system bus
Thinking more the Tosh Tecra M1 or this Acer which appears to be the daddy on spec

Sony are not the greatest looking but reliable. IBM suck (I has a thinkpad for 2 years that I sent back 4 times to be repaired for a fault that was never repaired and eventually got a full refund). I am currently using a Toshiba that I bought in the States. Totally recommend Toshiba. It has all the gizmos and was £700 cheaper in the USA than the equivalent model here.
I don't think the price differentials are that much now but it might be worth having a holiday in the states and buying one there. Have a look at www.bestbuy.com or www.circuitcity.com.
