Hi,

I have just got a laptop and would like to setup a wireless network with my PC - I have a broadband connection with NTL.

Unfortunatley I know as much about wireless networks as I do about eskimo culture (I believe fur is in this season...)

Can someone help! In particular:

1) Can I plug the cable lead into a 'transmitter' so my desktop and laptop can connect to the internet through it?

2) What do I need to connect the laptop and desktop to the 'transmitter'?

3) Does everything need to be from the same company or are all compatible?

4) Can I connect X-box to it as well?

Thanks,

Posh.

I have just set up my own wireless network with NTL broadband. I bought an Belkin wireless router, which connects by cable to the cable modem. For each machine you want to connect, you will need a wireless network card. I am using netgear cards, and they work fine with the belkin router.

Not so sure about security settings, as I still have to set mine up.

I've got a belkin router not the new 54g one though, but it does for my laptop, main pc, second pc, pvr and xbox are connected by cables, laptop is wireless and all works fine.
I couldn't set up the encrpytion (prolly me being thick) so just granted access to all my mac addy's, if you want to connect x box wirelessly i think you need to get an access point and plug ethernet canle into that (not quite sure though).

if the xbox is near the router, you should just be able to plug it into one of its's ethernet sockets.

www.ebuyer.co.uk is doing some really good value wireless access point (AP) and wireless client.

have a look at...

www.adslguide.org.uk (in the hardware review section)
www.seg.co.uk (good picture explaining what bits and pieces you need, etc)
