I have a Hitachi DVD-ROM GD 5000 as my slave master disc drive.

In Device Manager it tells me Device Type is 'CDROM' and that Manufacturer is '(Standard CDROM Device)'

It would seem then that this is capable only of playing CD-ROMs. Why on earth is it called a DVD-ROM, it even has hat embossed on the outside of the tray??

I am about to upgrade my CD-Writer to a DVD writer, so it obviously makes sense to upgrade this CD-Reader to a DVD player at the same time. In so doing, are there any particular compatibilty points I should be aware of?

I think windows still reports it as a CD-ROM rather than a DVD-ROM. You should still be able to watch DVDs and stuff once you have the player software installed.

Yep, I have a Hitachi DVD-ROM GD 7000 sitting around somewhere. Install some DVD player software and try it out. It should install the device drivers to play DVD's.

Spent an hour (inc 20mins waiting) with Dell on the phone. Conclusion was I need another DVD drive (which the cost of the call could have covered!) Seems strange that it reads CDs without a problem

I like the sound of the Panasonic SW-9581-C (RAM compatible) so it would seem to make sense to get a Panasonic 16x48 DVD ROM (Read DVD-RAM also)- £28 on Scan.co.uk

Whilst I am attracted to the principle of RAM, I don't know what this RAM cartridge will look like. The SW 9581-C has a normal disc tray and takes a normal DVD blank disc. The RAM disc has to be removed from the cartridge to fit into the tray.
