Question

We're with BTOpenworld for our business connection (inc fixed IPs etc)

Some twonk registered a domain without my knowledge with NOT our usual people

Now, I need to get the domain pointing @ our IP & also the Mx records, so that I can host a website & whack the emails through our exchange server.

So, as you'd guess, the BT bit aren't much help & the guys who've registered it aren't either. They say I need an IPS tag + NS'ers.

So can someone provide me a little help on this?

Thanks

To redelegate a .co.uk domain you need to change the IPS Tag to that of the ISP you wish to move it to as well as updating the nameservers.

Your current or new ISP should be able to perform a redel for you - they do 10's/100's of these a day so it wont be a problem.

For example (using my domain):

Domain Name:
p1f.co.uk

Registrant:
Simon Collins

Registrant's Address:
26 Lone Tree Ave
Impington
Cambridge
Cambs
CB4 9PG
GB

Registrant's Agent:
Host Europe Internet Limited [Tag = HOSTEUROPE] *****This is the IPS Tag!
URL: http://www.webfusion.co.uk

Relevant Dates:
Registered on: 08-Dec-2002
Renewal Date: 08-Dec-2004
Last updated: 09-May-2003

Name servers listed in order:
ns.hosteurope.com 212.67.202.2 *****NS record
ns2.hosteurope.com 212.67.203.246 *****Secondary NS Record

WHOIS database last updated at 14:30:01 30-May-2003

BT Openworlds IPS tag is BTNAMES - if that is where you are going to move the domain.

HTH,
Simon

Whoever 'you' registered the domain with is, I guess, efectively 'hosting' the domain, in that they hold the DNS records for the domain. You should have a facility, through them, to alter your records, and thus insert your mx/ns records into their DNS. You do not need to actually 'move' the domain, in order to host your webserver/mail server on your machines.

AFAIK, you only need the IPS tag if you actually want to change your domain Host (i.e. change who holds your DNS record).

Yep thats right - I thought from your post that you were implying that you wanted to move the domain and ur ISP were acting stupid.

If you do want to move the domain then now is probably a better time before it goes live.

If you do need to move the domain and your current provider tries to play hardball (by refusing/taking a long time to change the IPS tage) then in the past I've managed to persuade Nominet to retag it themselves after a few phonecalls and faxes.

Apparently fast? hosts don't do this themselves. The only way is to get BT Openmuddle to request the IPS tag changing or to give me one that I can use...

Yet to get any joy from BT regards whom to speak to etc... Voices not email preferably

You need to get whoever the IPS tag is currently assigned to to do the changes. You can find this out by doing a DNS lookup on your domain. If it is indeed Openworld, then they will have to make the changes. If they fart you around, start talking to Nominet.
