MK council running wireless broadband pilot
#1
Just seen this (if you can't get ADSL):
A pilot of a wireless based broadband service is being considered and is currently the subject of a tender process to Milton Keynes Council. The Council aim to provide the service to about 200 properties in the Milton Keynes area. The initial service is projected to last for about 4 months. Essentially a small receiving antennae (dish - varying sizes up to about 16 inches square) is put onto an individual's house and a cable is run from the antennae (dish) into the home to a cable modem that is in turn connected to a Personal Computer. The antennae will pick up a signal from a nearby transmission point (perhaps up to 5 kms distant) and via this means broadband internet access services will be provided into the pilot homes (residential addresses).
Anyone interested to be a part of the forthcoming pilot (trial) will need to be prepared to facilitate access for the equipment installation and to record their views on the quality of the services provided. No one that can already gain access to affordable broadband Internet services (eg ADSL) can take part in the pilot. In the longer run the services will be charged for but at this stage (subject to tender outcomes) we do not anticipate any substantive charge for services delivered during the pilot study period.

Another company is also apparently launching a wireless service in a couple of areas of Milton Keynes:

Thanks
