Question

I want to register a domain name, where's the best place?

I found these 2 http://www.clicknames.net http://www.your-name-here.co.uk

I found they vary from £8.81 (.co.uk) to £50+ for two years.

does it make a difference where it's registered?, I wouldn't have thought it did but why are the prices different?.

I got bitten by this, some people insist your website is on their servers.

This guy is a scooby owner and has been very helpful to me

I'm new to website names, hosts etc.

I also need space to upload to. I have 50mb with ntl, i understand i need an ftp to upload my site but how do i use the www.****.co.uk name I want.

Don't want annoying pop ups and stuff so guess I have to pay for this

Some registrars insist that your server is with them, others will allow you to register with them and use your existing server. Another thing to watch is the amount of data transfer you will use.

Titan do the following:

50MB of webspace
5 individual POP3 email accounts
500MB of data transfer per month
Custom Error Pages

This is the ideal starter package and our most popular. Fast reliable webspace for a fast reliable internet presence.

Only £50.00 per year

Be very careful as well that many will charge you if you want to move your domain to another provider, I use 1&1 www.oneandone.co.uk biggest provider in europe, very cheap and great service with no transfer out fees as well.

Sorry folks, but I have one that IMO, completely and utterly blows the other hosting companies away.

http://www.web-mania.com

I use them for the Battlefield 1942 clan site that I run http://thesasclan.net and they are stupidly cheap, but the service is absolutely amazing. Lightning quick 95% of the time, with only one glitch that I have encountered on a sunday afternoon where the site was down for an hour or so. Yep, they worked that quickly to sort the server out on a sunday afternoon . Have always been excellent with email support, anytime of day or night. I don't work for them or have any other connection with them apart from being a very, very happy customer. I keep telling them that they should charge sensible rates for their services, as I don't want to see them go under.

You can get the following package with them:

500Mb of disk space
3Gb of data transfer per month
Frontpage extensions
Unlimited POP3 mail@yourdomain.com
Unlimited mail forwarding mail@yourdomain.com
Unlimited subdomains of your domain name
e.g. http://subdomain.yourdomain.com/
CGI-BIN directory
Control Panel
Perl 5
PHP 4
SSI (server side includes)
MySQL Database
Full Telnet access
Full FTP access
Detailed visitor statistics
Close control downflow air conditioning units.
UPS system and Generator back-up

£20 per year!

Including a domain name it cost me only £40. I was not expecting the earth by any means, but really feel that I have got it with these guys. Truly a first class service for the money.

Chris m8, please leave this up, as I really feel these guys deserve to be known a little better, as it is a rare thing nowadays to be completely happy with a product IMO.

Cheers,

Nick

BTW, their control panel facility online is easy to use and fairly powerful too.

I use clicknames... they can park a domain for you if you've not got a site to point it at yet.

But the question is how much does it cost you if you go over your 3GB/month ?

I will be impressed if as a home user you do. The site that I run has over a hundred members and has a lot of people going through it, with a lot of images etc. I am nowhere near my bandwidth limit each month month. It is a lot of bandwidth for a home user. Remember repeat users will more than likely have the stuff cached on their loacl machines, saving bandwidth too.

LOL, I noticed, it's always the way, you recommend something for being really reliable and it dies on you

My site is down too, so they must have problems atm at the main systems.

You point being?

Not much that I can do about it

Like I said, apart from one sunday afternoon where there was a hiccup, this is the only other bit of downtime I have seen from them.

Just to argue with you Gary, I was very tempted by OneandOne originally, but I found that a lot of the time they couldn't even keep their maine site quick and I used to see them go down too so that kind of put me off them. Anyway

These things happen from time to time. It's not like we are talking about hosting HOOJ important companies from them, so the rare bit of downtime is not the end of the world at the end of the day
