Depends on what you intend to play your backups on. You need to get a writer that writes in either DVD-R or DVD+R depending on what format is supported by your player.

Personally I have a 4 x DVD-R at home and a Sony firewire DVD+/-R at work.

Take a look at VCDHelp and see what formats are supported bu your player.

you can "back-up" DVD's on to most of the formats, what matters is what your player will read, take a look at the compatabilty list here
http://www.dvdplusrw.org/resources/compatibilitylist_dvdvideo.html

you will also find that you can't usually "back-up" a DVD movie onto a single disc and either have to split it of recompress it. this is due to commercial DVD disc's being multi-layer and hence larger capacity then the dvd +/- R/RW discs

Exclamation

I have a Toshiba 2X dvd-r writer.
DVDshrink to cut/compress(freeware)
Nero to copy.

If you only want the film you can fit it on one disc with no/very minimal loss of quality.

My theory is get the cheapest writer cos in a year or so even the best one will be superceded.

I'd been considering an NEC ND1000 - Internal 2x1x4x8 IDE DVD+RW at £136 plus VAT.

What do you think?

Once again, thanks for the help.

I got that NEC writer and am extremely pleased with it. Think I only paid 110 quid for it though as I went with the bare drive package...

btw...is there any reason why a write once dvd should be any better quality than a rewritable one of the same standard?
