3 questions:

1. How do you select part of an image? ie: the hiar off a person.

2. How do you place an image onto another and have it in the background. ie; with part of the first image overlaid.

3. Why doe my my photoshops colours screw up if I minimize it and the maximize it and why are the colours screwed whn I use "Extract" for example?

Cheers.

Jason.

Use the Magic Wand tool, second tool down on the right of the main toolbar. Changing the Tolerance value near the top of the screen alters the size of the selection.

In this image the magic wand tool was clicked in exactly the same place but the tolerance settings were changed to 10, 20, and 100 respectively.

Entering a low value selects colors that are very similar to the pixel you click on; entering a higher value selects a wider range of colors.

I'll let someone else answer the next 2 questions as I have to go

If you are looking to crop an image of a person with "fluffy" hair then the best way is to carefully draw around the person using your create path tool(the one that looks like a fountain pen) selecting everything except the hair. Once you have completed the path around the person you can turn that into a selection using the "paths" panel.

Next you will need to get the lasso tool. Once you have selected the lasso tool, you will see a box underneath the task bar that says "feather" put in a value of about 10-30 dependant on the size of your image. Then as acuratley as you can and whilst holding shift down draw around the persons hair.

This will give you a single selection that is part feathered and part acurate. You can then cut and paste your selection into any image you want and the hair will look like it naturally belongs on any background.

Although it may take some time it is by far the best way to get pro results

Sorry I can't explain it any clearer but I can't get to an uploader to show you any examples.
