I am with O2 on my mobile, and having trouble getting the laptop to connect via IR. I hit connect and the phone dials the ISP's No. As soon as the number has finished dialling the phone beeps twice and cuts off.
I used to use it with a nokia 8850 & voda with no problems. My current phone is a 6510. I have tried to put my sim in the 8850 but it still doesent work, so it must be O2. On thier website they say you have to have subscribe to their service and pay silly money per meg as seen here : http://www.o2.co.uk/productsservices...0,,143,00.html.
However I can get my phone and punch in the No of the ISP and it will dial with no problem - you just get the squiggly screechy noise ( like loading a ZX spectrum ).
Why can I dial my ISP manually but not through infra red? is there something on the sim that is barring calls from modems, and if so is there a fix for it?
thanks,
mike.

GPRS is cheapest option tbh
I currently get mine FOC but I'm developing GPRS/PDA solutions
Other than that, its £1 per meg
You need to pay for Data Calls at some point if you use dial-up. Check the going rate. You also can't just dial an ISP & expect it to work, that's why its Data Calls, & these are charged at a slightly higher rate. I guess you need to do a comparison but GPRS is widely considered to be the more cost-effective solution.
You probably don't have to use O2 but you'll need an ISP that supports data calls (Demon do with Orange certainly, dunno about other providers) & they are rare, plus you'll probably pay a higher rate for going cross-network.
