Has anyone got any experience of creating an OS image that can be booted from an internal tape drive on a Solaris machine ??

According to a mate:

Can't be done. Was possible on SunOS 4.x but support for that went a long time ago. You can store a FlashArchive on tape then create a generic bootable CD (or boot from the network) which starts a JumpStart install using the FlashArchive.
