Question

Finally getting ADSL installed in our town in May... hurrah!

Currently with Virgin.net - who have been an excellent dial in ISP over the years. Dont want to lose my email addresses we have set up with virgin so have signed up/converted my account for their Broadband service @ £24.99 per month.

They are 'recommending I immediately purchase' their 'Home Modem' kit - consisting of an Alcatel Speedtouch USB Modem (green frog!) & two line filters for £79.99.

So three things....

1) Am I being robbed for £79.99?

2) I've heard mixed things about these green frogs.... what does the power of scoobynet recommend?

3) They also say, depending on the number of phone sockets in the house, I may need more filters. We have quite a few wall sockets, but only two are actually used.... Do I need a filter for every outlet, or only every USED outlet?

I thank you.....

Sounds like you are going wires only. You only need a filter for every used outlet.. remember the adsl will take an outlet from a splitter.

For that price for a adsl modem, you could get an adsl router...

Try looking here

BT are now only £40 for the modem and two filters . I'm going to wireless later in the month so I'm buying an all in one unit to replace the standard BT modem.

A "frog" modem will only be about £25 from ebay. I can get an v good adsl 4 port router for about £55. Inline filters are only about £4-5 each. So you could do it as low as £35 if you shop around.

PS "frog" was ok as a simple solution, but the router works better plus you can have a firewall and other features on the router.

Virgin has some issues with some manufactures If you have a single computer then the USB modem will be fine along as you protect your computer with a software firewall ie zonealarm. However, please note that if you ever want to share you broadband connection then the USB modem doesn't have much of an upgrade path.

As for your microfilters, you only need one for each socket you use.

The cheapest service provided i found was giointernet. £18.95 per month including VAT, £55 one off connection fee.

Been trying to find some reviews on this service before i try it out.
The most appealing thing about Gio is the minumum contract period of 3 months. I dont like the idea of being tied into a 12 month contract when im pretty sure that ADSL will get cheaper during that time.
If anyone has any usefull information on Giointernet i would appreciate it.

Thanks

Chris

ICS will work with a USB ADSL Modem

As for GIO - ask away here. I believe GIO are a Virtual ISP? http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist...Board=otherisp

However, I can't get on their website http://www.gointernet.com/ Gives me full of confidence in their ADSL service suppose you pay for what you get

Rolling one month adsl contracts for £18.95? where ?

Yep, i agree, u get what you pay for. It would probably suit me fine though since i dont spend endless hours on the internet. I just want something thats fast and fairly cheap. Dial up is no longer acceptable when i am used to the T1 we have at the office

Just noticed, u cant get on their website cos thats the wrong URL its http://www.giointernet.com

Thanks for all the info - not paying £79.99 then!

Deffo go for an ADSL Router, as I prob will be sharing it with a laptop or two, and also like the idea of NAT or a simple firewall.

As for the Contract time... Virgin are:-
...you will need to give us 30 days notice in order to cancel your Broadband connection and swap back to another Tariff.
So Virgin appear to offer Month long contracts......

What Manufacturers do Virgin have 'Issues' with Roadrunner?

Thanks for the replies...

Given the cost price of a 512k DSL from BT Wholesale, sustaining it out to the end user at that price will be hard work.

Eclipse run on one month rolling contracts.

Dr Hu - The best and safest router to go for is the Netgear DG814 ADSL router. Its a good/cost effective router for home users and works fine on Vigrin.

Roadrunner,

Thanks for that, but when i said i dont use it for endless hours i didnt mean i dont spend 7 hours at a time on it during the weekend.
That could be dangerous i think, paying for the amount if data you download

We are looking to move house soon, so there is no point in getting ADSL at the moment, cos i will have to pay another connection charge when i get in the new house.

With any luck, by the time i am ready to get ADSL, it should be even cheaper

Whats wrong with 7hrs plenty of time to surf the net

With any luck, by the time i am ready to get ADSL, it should be even cheaper
The way prices are going an ISP will no doubt offer free access as a promo
