Question

Hi,

I have a laptop that has what appears to be a bios password.. (I do know what the password is)
But when you enter the bios there's not one set.. ?
As soon as you power on, the password prompt appears.
I've recently formatted the pc to install a new o/s but the thing is still resident. Any Ideas on where this could be set/disabled ??

Cheers

power on password?

when you see it in the bios, it will be clear, just go to change password, type in the old one, and leave the new password blank. make sure you save settings when you exit the bios

I think removing the cmos battery from the motherboard and then put it back on again would clear the password. This clears the BIOS.

hmm, in the BIOS under 'Password' it says 'Not Registered'
So I've put one in, then it says, 'Option, Eject Password=Disabled'
So I enable it..

Then when I exit/save bios the following message appears..
'Password Service Disk Type ? (1:2HD,2:2DD)'

Either option give a 'Write Fault Error'

I'm guessing my bios has got screwed up, and thus screwing my password settings.. will try and reset it i guess...

What make and model is it ?? Had some Tohibas that once set you had to put a special plug on the printer port to clear it, also some have a dip swith or jupmper under the keyboard to clear passwords.

On a computer I had about 3 years ago, the BIOS password was disabled by setting it to blank. You went through the action of setting a new password but did not type any characters in. When you had done this it did not prompt you on power on.

You could try this. I am afraid that I can't remember which BIOS it was.

In the bios

Seriously it should be there somewhere, like Set Admin pass, Set user pass or something, just go through every option. If it doesnt have a pass showing thats wierd although usually being blanked out is a feature of passes. Worse thing if you muck it up you can reset the cmos although that can me a right pain with lappies.

Another thing it might be is some sort of custom manufactures pass, like an anti theft pass, these can be a right pain to switch off as they are usually custom made for that particular mobo etc.

Have you any documentation for it?

That's the bizarre thing, I thought a flash to the latest bios would do the trick, but that didn't .. grrrrr
