Do a search for a paackge on the 'net called DVDXCopy. Their main site is here. I'm not sure if they have the PAL version done yet, but by all accounts it works well with NTSC stuff.
It is also legal to use in the sense that it doesn't break/crack the Macrovision protection so for backups it seems legal. Copies are identical to the original but have a small "This is a backup copy" notice when you first insert the disk.
All this is from a magazine so don't take my word for it.

i've got DVDxcopy and it does the trick. I've not had one failure yet. For dual layer DVD's (anything over about 90minutes) it will split the movie over 2 DVD-R's unless you can source dual layer DVD-R's - which I'm not sure even exist for public use???
Anyway, it bloody good and works fine for most UK DVD's.
