On one of the pc's at work we keep getting pop-ups for some **** thing. They land with an annoying ping every 20mins or so. I have also had a pop-up informing me that this is due to an un secure port or something? They offer software to rectify the problem. What should I do?

Chaz

DON'T take up their offer of any software for starters

Get hold of something like Spybot It is like Adaware (only better) - it will clean up your PC get rid of spyware etc. Also make sure your AV software is current and run a full scan to make sure you haven't got anything nasty on your PC.

STOP your users surfing **** sites at work! If they download anything really nasty, your company could be liable. Take reasonable steps - get a firewall and a security policy and make sure evryone signs up to it.

Down to only one pop up now!
Are there upgrades to the software like Norton to seek and destroy new versions of pop ups?

Thanks again.

Why is it better? At present I use Adaware 6 and have no probs with it but am always looking for anything better? is it freeware?

Download Spybot and see Spybot is one of the original programs of this genre. It has been the basis for most of the spyware engines seen in similar packages. There is nothing wrong with Adaware, but you do find that different programs search in different ways. I too run Adaware 6, but I also run Spybot. Spybot will also look at history files, log files etc - anything that could contain personal information. It is very thorough. It is also free, so you have nothing to lose.

I have now installed spybot & have to say I am very impressed. It detected plenty more stuff that Adaware didn't & gives you plenty of info on the detected files. It scans alot faster as well. The other tools incorporated into it are usefull as well.
Just deciding whether or not to uninstall adaware now.
Chris, has it ever detected anything that spybot has not?

Hi Darren

Yes it did a couple of days ago. That's why I think it is worth having both. They do things in a slightly different way.

If, by now, you are getting totally paranoid (I am, but then I work in IT security, so it's my job to be paranoid ), also have a look at SpywareBlaster - I think there is a link to it from an option in SpyBot (or do a google search). It is not a cleaner, like SpyBot, but it stops dodgy code being installed in the first place. Quick, free and easy. Runs in the background always protecting your PC. Well worth it IMHO.
