ummm, Parallel cables are a bit tricky in my experience.

Are you using some software to connect the 2 with a parallel cable? something like laplink?

Crossover cables are as the name suggests, some of the wires are crossed over and inserted into different slots on the plug end.
this is on cat 5 cable, not parallel cables btw

Cross over, if you look at both ends, they cross. Thc colour pattern is different.

Also go into control panel, network. Then lan connection, TCP/IP properties.

Set the IP to 192.168.0.10
and the other pc to 192.168.0.12
think subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 i think, does it auto some times.

Then go into command, and ping each other.

To get the hard drives to share. Share them 1st, thenclick on run the type \\192.168.0.xx

right click on the shared hard drive them map to it

I think yo're all assuming he's trying to use a network cable.
Direct Cable Connection is an optional component that can be used to link systems using parallel or serial ports, no network cards are involved.

The cable required is the same as a laplink cable.
If you have access to an old DOS system then the help for interserv gives the cable pinout.

Stef, if you have network cards in both machines forget about Direct Cable Connect - too confusing and slow by comparison.

If you're using a hub, you need straight-through cables. If you're connecting PC-PC (no hub) then a crossover cable.

Assuming this is a temporary link, forget about the hub. Connect the two network cards together using a crossover cable then on the first machine right click on the Netword icon, properties, find the entry for TCP/IP with the name of the network card after it (NOT the one that says TCP/IP dialup networking adapter)

1. Enter 192.168.0.1 into the IP address field and 255.255.255.0 into the subnet field.
2. Check and make a note of the workgroup name (on the identity tab on the 98 machine)
3. Make sure you have "File and Print Sharing" installed, if not install it using the ADD button.
4. Open "My Computer" right click on the drive(s) you want to share and click the Share As option and choose Full Access or Read Only as necessary.

Now repeat 1-4 on the other machine, but use 192.168.0.2 in the IP field and make sure the workgroup name in step 2 matches that on the other machine (change it if necessary)

Reboot both machines. One either machine open Network Neighborhood / My Network Places > Entire Network > [name of workgroup] > and you should see icons for the other machine and have access to the shared drive
