Always check the filename (not just description) and only download files with more then about 5 sources. Check the filenames of all sources too. There are a lot of timewasters out there.
If its an avi file. Start it off, get about 2Mb of it then check it using Avi Viewer to make sure it is what is says.

If it's a big file i'm downloading, I tend to IM the sources to see what they have to say about the file...and threaten to send 'the boys' round if it's not what it says on the tin

Had to laugh - mate of mine downloaded what he thougt was some disney movie for the kids, turned out to be the full "Debbie Does Dallas" movie from the 70's.
