Anyone know of any suppliers with stock of the Sony DVD writers?

Try Novatech but make sure you have the right part - they do a retail and an OEM package, the retail has more software.

Decent DVD writers are like hens teeth at the moment.

A friend of mine has a very good business building machines for large companies and government departments, and he's had a load on order since last November.

In view of the short supply, I wouldn't expect to find many 'deals' out there at the moment.

I agree with Josh. Started looking for a 500a last november and finally got a full retail not oem one a few weeks ago. The list price from sony is £250 but because of demand some retailers are getting away with £280. Also the 500a has just been replaced with the 500ax

mmm and the difference in the 500AX is? Did they update either writer speed?

I dont know, the read/write speed seems the same once the 500a is upgraded to firmware 1.0g. the drive even looks the same. It may just be a firmware thing, the 500a firmware is not compatible with the 500ax and vice versa.
