What's a Telefax?

Is it just another generic name for a fax machine or is it something different.
I worked for a Norwegian shipping company and they always referred to the Telefax on ships. Since they used different equipment, I assumed it was a slightly different service from a normal fax machine.
Anyone know what the difference is (if any)?

Quite likely just a fax, although from my experience of working for shipping companies on the IT side, Telex is still widely used.
Combination of the two? Never been on a ship to look!

My understanding is that it is just a fax machine that uses radio/satellite as the carrier rather than a phone line you or I would use.
That is from a sailing friend of mine.

That was my understanding, but I've only ever came across them either on RN warships or merchant navy ships.
Can they be used just like a normal fax? My friend needs to send stuff to his Embassy in London (Portuguese) and they only have a Telefax number.
