Question

Hi all,

re my own thread

My pc is playing up, very strange. When I power up first thing in the morning(press a button on the keyboard - as set up in the bios) it normally humms for about 3 seconds then dies. So I pull the power cord out the back, give it 5 mins and then tries again. Seems then to work perfectly.

The other odd thing Ive noticed is that sometimes it appears to be running at 900mhz and others 1200mhz, it is a 1200 processor and was set to be run at 1200.

Really strange, cant decide if this is power supply or motherboard, or something else???

Any ideas?

I have decided to get a new power supply. Id really like something that was quieter or silent? and pref has 2 fans(pc seems to over heat if case not left off)

So can anyone recomend any??? if so where from.

(its ATX athlon, needs to be 350+)
cheers

Andy

Low noise - sounds like a bit of a vague statement!!

If they dont give you the dB level - dont buy it...

£15 - christ what did they skimp on!!! - you will be luck if it has a fan!!!! lol

I got the 550w psu, and its running a heavily overclocked cpu whilst supplying the freezer with power.

I highly rate it.

www.maplin.co.uk do the q-tec PSU as well (at a much higher price!). q-tec website is at www.qtec.info. dont think there's any problems with q-tec PSU, so go for it

good article, shame the q-tec isnt in it really.

Either way Im on the dole and need to fix my computer with the best price/performance trade off!

This one seems to fit the bill.

Results to follow!!!

erratic crashing etc can also be caused by the motherboard being mounted badly (i.e. a metal case/motherboard mount is touching something it shouldnt) - before you go buying anything it would be advisable to take the motherboard out and sit it on an antistatic bag (or peice of clean/dry cardboard if you aint got one)& power it up & see if the problem disapears - really a very effective way of testing it - i know its a pain but if you have 60 mins spare do it...

At home and for work I only currently use enermax as they are just so relyable & longlasting & quiet - but beware the model numbers the are some quieter than others...

Si you winkle, the only thing that the PSU supplies power to in the freezer system is the little controller box, which inturn runs the 2 120mm fans
