Locked Out Of A Briefcase...
#1
NT4 W'station
User stored work files in My Briefcase ( ). I took the machine out of one domain & put it in a new one.
Even logged in as machine administrator, unable to access that briefcase/those files
Obviously, can't log in as what the user used to be as that domain no longer exists.
Ideas or help?

Can you put the Workstatoin back onto the original domain, login as administrator for the domain, and then take ownership of the folder?

Yeah, the Access Control List is just who has permissions to the folder, subfolders and files.
You can use the CACLS utility to add any user to the current list for the Briefcase.
Taking ownership, simply removes the current ACL and creates and new one with just the new owner having full control to all files, folders and subfolders.

In NT, even the administrator can be kept out of folders. If you zero permissions, you need to take ownership then assign yourself whatever rights you need, otherwise the original user (i.e. creator/owner) needs to do it.

Bad hair day for anacronyms
& I'm fed up of legacy DOS programs that I know nothing about falling over
& I'm fed up of slow, clunky, no RAM, old machines on which these programs reside
& I'm fed up of dodgy print-servers
& I'm fed up of quite a few more things besides...
However, I'm slowly bringing the network into recent (ish) history & there is light at the end of the tunnel
Problem is, whilst these problems with the old exist, the data is not being transfered by the users into the NEW system, so it'll be longer before I'm happy
Job this afternoon?
Finally replace the last Win95 machine on the network & re-tire the Novell 3.12 server that it has to use as it has no disk space left
