David - buy one!!
I bought a 14.1 800mhz iBook just before Christmas and ma very happy with it.
'Switching' is very very easy, buy Mac Office and you're pretty much sorted!
Considered a 17 inch Powerbook
Andy.

In comparison, the Mac G4 is well, much faster than it's comparable PC eg. MAC 1GHz G4 is twice as fast as a P4 1GHz.
Makes you think about the top-end Dual processor 1GHz G4 - equivalent to a P4 4GHz!!!!
I've got several Macs - a G4, a G3 and a PowerBook (all used for audio/music production), also got an Athlon-based PC (glorified typewriter!!!)
MACS RULE!!!

The new PB's are lovely, must secure one for 'development' use
Mr Hackett, have a chat with AllanB about it, he'll tell you what you want and how much.
Oh, and if any of you mac types have any support type probs, then you can always drop me an email, I might be able to help.

AllanB - a few questions .
What is the approx retail cost of a G4 powerbook w/a big (16" or 17") screen?
If I want to connect it to a WiFi network can I use a regular PCMCIA card antenna or do I need to use AirPort?
What if both the other computers on the network are PC's?
Here's an obscure one ... does it have support for Japanese characters in Word, e-mail, IE etc?
Sorry for all the questions
Thanks in advance.

Father Jack.
Retail cost of PowerBooks from http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore/
15" widescreen with CDR/DVDROM combo - £1899
15" widescreen with DVDR - £2199
17" widescreen with DVDR - £2598
Similar prices to be found on the high street, if you buy from John Lewis they give you an extra year's warranty for free! If you like the 15" I'd wait as they're due for an upgrade to include DDR-RAM, Bluetooth, AirPort Extreme, FireWire 800 and an Aluminium shell.
You can use regular PCMCIA and Cardbus cards as long as they provide drivers. Given that the AirPort card is a similar price and is internal, I'd go for that really. It's standard 802.11b and g.
Windows networking compatability ain't a problem - http://www.apple.com/uk/macosx/jaguar/compatibility.html
All usual PC stuff is available, MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, MSN Messenger and of course Photoshop, Flash, Director, Dreamweaver, Fireworks etc. You can even pull your hard disc out of your PC and install it in a Mac and it'll read/write to it without needing to reformat.
Japanese language support built in right out of the box.
Check out http://www.apple.com/uk after you've hidden your credit card :-)
Sorry none of the links are clicky, but the BBS Code Syntax link doesn't work!

Father jack did one of my collegues from MacWarehouse contact you ?
If not email me at work at allan.bayman@eu.mwhse.com and I'll get it sorted.
These is a big backlog on the 17" PowerBook. We should have stock first as MacWarehouse is Apples largest UK reseller.

AllanB - thanks for following up. No-one has contacted me, but that would have been impossible because the roads at Craggy Island have been taken in due to bad weather and the phone line is busy blocked due to Father Dougal looking at priests sites on the internet. Also there are no contact details in my profile.
It seems that some software that I'd need to install in order to access work intranet from home may be PC-specific. Since I would need to use it for that I need to check that out first.
If that is OK I will drop you a line. What do you think likely arrival time at MacWarehouse would be?
Also, a very specific question: is the USB version 2.0?
Cheers,
Jack

Hi Father Jack,
Seems we're all chipping in on this one, us Mac people are a friendly lot! USB included is not USB2 as Apple prefer to push FireWire as the high speed interface, mainly because they invented it. Most Manufacturers offer USB2 and FireWire versions. If you really needed USB2, you could add it via the PC Card slot.
The only information I could find with regard to connecting to a VPN is here:
http://www.apple.com/switch/questions/sharing/vpn.html
However, with more information on how your remote access is set up, I'm sure we could find something.
On the subject of MacWarehouse, I have always found them to be reliable and prompt and would recommend them. I previously purchased two Macs from them before I became eligable for an Education discount through the Apple Store.

adheyes - I am getting a warm feeling from all these friendly Apple folks ... mmmm ... how different from the rabid overclockers with their cranked up pc's ...
Connection is over broadband connection via a utility called remoteaccess. You go to a web page with your browser and input password etc - sounds simple but first time you set it up it installs files on your home computer.
Many thanks,
Jack

We can't edit titles, sorry
As for "1GHz on a mac is twice as fast as a 1GHz PC", I pass no comment as I really don't care enough, but just check out what an ardent well respected mac user (Rob Galbraith) found when he tested this hypothesis... http://www.robgalbraith.com/diginews..._07_macpc.html
Please don't take it as a flame war. Hell, I still have two amigas in my posession , plus a Powerbook 170 of no small vintage that sees occasional use
Rob's also posted a follow-up recently, no doubt to try and justify his heresy http://www.robgalbraith.com/diginews..._08_macpc.html
Macs are without doubt superb, but the regularly touted "fact" that a powerPC processor (RISC instruction set) is around twice as fast as an x86 architecture processor (CISC instruction set) should be treated to some scrutiny.
Of course, this does not take into account the fact that anyone can pick up a Mac and be productive in a very, very short time
Nick.
(feeling that I've just dropped something off and am running away with the cry "fire in the hole...")

I've always been a windows man, but this thing is way cool.
To start off I opened the box and it's got this little light on at the back. Open it up and in seconds its on - so far so good.
Configured it within a minute to get on the net via my network
Got a tad fed up with the mouse pad thing, so just plugged my USB cordless mouse in and - hay - no reboot no disc - it just works
Plays DVD's and records CD's
Just off to see how it handles my camera.
Impressed so far - very !
Down side – I think I have to buy one
David
Did I say poer - oh well you know I mean Power !!
