The pistol is very good in zoomed in mode for picking guys off with head shots.
Other than that I use the Covenent weapons instead of the pistol/rifle combo as they're more powerful and ammo is plentifull.
The only excpetion to this is the rocketlauncher, sniperrifle, and shotgun - which requires closeup combat.
I find I strafe a lot more on the harder skill levels as it saves getting hit easier.

Only two weapons should be used here, shotgun and pistol. The sniper and rocket only appear on sections you actually need them on.
The level where you follow the librarian through the complex is the hardest section ever, I recommend slow progress, pulling mobs out bit by bit before moving on.
I've completed it and you get a few extra scenes on the end sequence, pretty funky =)

yep - shotgun is effective but only close up.
I always find when using any weapon the can zoom in - if you get shot then you lose your zoom - very frustrating if in battle !

Once tactic recommended by the game producer in an interview included using a two pistol set up. Overcharge a covenant pistol and if it hits an elite it discharges their shields completely. They can then be dispatched with a headshot from your regulation pistol.

Gees this is slow progress - you have to think much more & plan your attack rather than just run into the open & let rip.
Anyone got any tips for progress (any levels !)
I have just completed Truth & Reconsiliation (rescued Keyes etc) & am on the Silent Cartographer but progress is slow.
BTW The beach scene where you & the Marines storm up the beach on Legendary is just sooooo cool.
I am using grenades a lot more that on other skill levels - but any tips on general progress - when it seems that the baddies can pick you off from 30feet away !!
