Footlong.....sooo glad i read this post. I've got:

XP2700+
512DDR 333
Raddy 9700 Pro
200GB HD

I play BF1942 all the time and up until now have been running 1024x768. After reading your post I upped it to max for a laugh 1600x1200 - i also turned on Hardware Acceleration for Audio. What can i say.....oh my god!!! It looks absolutely fantastic. The scenery looks almost lifelike and i get no slow down. Not sure if it was coincidence but since downloading 1.3 patch i'd noticed slowdown and also weird static type noises. Apparently though its the patch that has done this. But now i've turned on Hardware Acceleration of sound all that has gone.

The only prob with 1600x1200 I've noticed is that the text (where people type comments and kills are displayed) seems all squashed up. It might be my monitor though not able to go to such hi-res. Its a 19" flat screen.

Anyway....cheers
Marc

Thumbs up

Now download all the DX9 demos and screensavers from ATI's webbie and be impressed all over again

Me fav game for showing it off atm is Moto GP, in the rain with the lightening, and everything maxed at 1024 X 768, 4X AA and 8 X AF and still getting a smooth 60 fps

Unreal 2 also looks amazing with everything maxed.

I would imagine 1600 X 1200 would kill the refresh rate of a TFT tbo. What is the refresh rate at this res, 60 Hertz? Do you get ghosting?

Sorry when i said flat screen i meant an ordinary 19" monitor but flat - no like those 'bulbous' monitors. Not a TFT.

Thinking of upgrading my GF4Ti4400 to a Crucial Rad 9700 Pro as well if I can offload it to someone.
The Crucial is a great deal.
Has the new Heatsink paste upped the overclockability?

I didn't do the paste for overclockability, I just always removed whatever old cod they smear/stick onto the heatsink.

This card I am actually going to overclock. I have never really bothered to with any of my nvidia cards, as the benefits were minimal. However, with these, you are looking at over 2000 bonus points in 3dmark on 2.8 cpu. I will be over 3.5ghz with Dual Channel DDR too, so hopefully the results will be even better. All I want is to get rid of that last bit of occasional slowdown that I get @1600x1200 and I will be happy

Ramsinks and new heatsink on back order for the card. Warranty viod-tastic

Cheers,

Nick

I know, I know, sorry. It's just that you have a fair few questions in there and I simply need to allocate enough time to answering them properly. If you had an idea of how many tech emails I get off here, it is scary

I will do my best, but I think that you may as well post the questions up here properly, as ChrisB, Dom A and Fatman etc know a lot of the same stuff that I do too

Cheers and will try soon, promise,

Nick

AFAIK Smoothvision does not work in 16 bit, it might be supported in future driver releases.

I am gonna order one tomorrow! Just found out I can get £150 for my Ti4400 at my local computer store! What a cheap upgrade!
Gonna get a new Barton XP processor as well soon to replace my XP2000+ and it will really fly then.

Why don't you buy the Radeon 9500 non pro, run the hack on it to open the other 4 pipes making it into a 9700 then buy RAM sinks and overclock it?

Hmmm all for about £120 EX VAT, you would be a fool not to

25% increase in benchmark tests even before OC'ing it, AVE IT

9700pro £230 bah

Is it now proven to work on 100% of the cards?

The hardware mod sure as hell didn't and then people were recieving mixed results with the software mod.

I gave up on it back then, as I couldn't be dealing with clocking the hell out of one of those cards and using hacks/mods.

It still is not proven that the 9500 cores with pipelines disabled have not been disabled without reason, like back in the PIII/Celeron days where a lot of the time, a PIII core found to have a partially defective cache, simple had it disabled and rebadged as a celeron. This could well still apply to the Radeon 9500 scenario.

Like I said tho, I stopped looking at it a while back now as it seemed like more hassle than it was worth. Interested to know if they have fully sussed what is going on

£230 for a card that is blisteringly fast, not overclocked to buggery and is 100% stable is perfectly good IMO, along with a lot of the others on here.

Cheers,

Nick.

What software do you recommend I download apart from Catalyst 3.0 Drivers & control panel, DirectX 9 demos & DirectX 9 itself?
Is anything else needed?

Hopefully it will perform better than the last ATI card I had.
An 8mb xpert98.
No OpenGL support.
No fun.
It somewhat soured my opinion of ATI and from there I went on to 3dfx and then nVidia.

Nick,

POst the results of over clocking it using ram sinks and artic silver III please! I want to know whether a clocked one will beat the new 9900

Also, how the heck do you get a computer shop to take back a graphics card? Anyone know anyone who owns a shop who i can nudge into taking mine back? (Geforce 4400)
