Question

I'm looking for a new hard disk after one of my ibm's died last night. What would you recommend? I'm after 80gb, IDE, fast access and preferably quiet.

Cool

Yes but the maxtor's also have an 8mb cache, fluid bearings and are ATA 133. Which are better and reliable?

Question

I can and will return the ibm but I no longer trust it so will just use it as a secondary disk. I'd like my main disk to be reliable.

well if it helps, the Compaq server drives are mainly IBM devices with our firmware on top. We buy the top 30% of IBM's drives and leave the rest to the others. We do use Maxtor and WD devices if the IBM's are in short supply.

The WD 800JB's are quiet in my experience to the ear. I have 2 of them. Very quick and no probs whatsoever with them so far. I have the deathstars, these and the 740DX series both with and without fluid bearing and highly rate the WD's. There are a couple of those maxtors you mention that perform very well too tho, from memory. The one thing that I can say is that you won't be diappointed if you do go the 800jb route.

Cheers,

Nick
