Hi,
I've currently got 2 x 256mb PC2700 DDR in my PC.
I've got a Nforce 2 MB , Raddy 9700 Pro and AMD 2700+.
I was thinking of upgrading my memory to some luvvely
2 x Corsair 512MB DDR XMS3500 Platinum CAS2 - 217Mhz memory speed (434Mhz DDR).
Is this worth it and more importantly will it work? Considering it'll cost £300 (but i'll be able to get about £100 for my old memory probably). Will i notice that much difference in my overall speed?
Thanks
marc

Speedy, mmmmmmmmmmm. I reckon you know the answer to whether its worth it. You have a top spec sys atm, and you want to run it as fast as poss. Its the laws of deminishing returns though.
Go for it...

Depends on what you use your computer for. Normal use ie MS Word etc, then i doubt you would notice any difference. Video/Audio compression etc, you should get an improvement. Games, well your system should be OK as it is. So for the extra cost, i would say it is not worth it.

I'd say - no - it's not worth it. You won't recover £100 from selling 2*256Mb DDR2700 chips, as the new price is only £44/256Mb. DDR2700 will run at 166MHz fsb, and DDR3500 will run at ~215MHz. That's a decent O/C, if you're able to get the NF2 board stable >200MHz fsb (can run asynchronously, remember) - not everyone can. It makes no financial sense to go to that upgrade, and I think you'd still see very decent performance running at 166.

SL2, I dont think markmann has this system (which is obviously custom built)including a 9700 pro and XP 2700 to do some wordprocessing, lol...
markmann I can get a reasonably stable 200 fsb with an Asus A7V333 and a bit of underclocking of CPU (voltage increased of course)and a stable 180 + with no props, so I would think you would be able to get the NForce stable at 200 np as its one of the top boards atm, especially with the XMS3500.
