Videogame violence

Once again, gaming is targeted as a cause for increasing levels of violence in society.
It's really getting on my mammaries.
Every time something happens in a community, some backward MP jumps on the "blame this XYZ game" bandwagon for inciting our children to go on the rampage with gun/ knife/ nuclear weapon (is that their excuse for war on Saddam I wonder.....)
Get a life.

Ok I'll bite....
So you don't think that violence in TV/Videos/Games *could* be a contributory factor in forming kid's behaviour. There is a hugew amount of anecdotal evidence to suggest that kids should not be routinely feed fizzy drinks or crisps, yet people still do.
My kids don't and won't have things like playstations because I remain to be convinced they are safe. You don't have to prove to me that they aren't dangerous, you have to prove they are safe.
I think common sense prevails. However, that doesn't appear to be that common these days.
Not knocking you, you do whatever you like, but everyone in society picks up the bill when things go wrong. Just IMHO.

Seeing as games have age ratings (like films) and parents are allowed to teach their kids right-n-wrong, surely this is enough.
Sure, show a kid robocop the film at the age of 3, and I'm sure he'll grow up into an avenging cyborg!
PS. FTR - I agree with you Devil's Refugee.

I think parents are too blame for some of it. Games like Vice City are cert 18 yet loads of school kids get their parents to buy it. This is a game which makes it cool to blow peoples heads off, sell drugs, steal cars, make porno movies, swear etc etc. If I had a kid I certainly wouldn't want them playing this type of game at the age of 13. Would u?

CJones944: What would prove to you that video games are 'safe'?
How do you define 'safe'? I doubt that there are any pastimes that could be 'proven' to have no possibility of being harmful in any way.

Mr cjones944. Would you let your kids watch Tom and Jerry? That's much more violent than many so called violent games and I don't believe it would ever turn a child into a violent person. Maybe they would act out some scenes in a playful way with friends, but it would not turn them into something they previously weren't making them use violence maliciously were they wouldn't have done before. It's way over the top to stop a child having a Playstation as there are many non violent games they can enjoy as well - surely you know this???

Fortunately my son only likes Football games and the odd platformer.
I do abide by the certification on films with the exception of Spiderman as he reads the comics and considers it fantasy.
Will not play MGSII or watch films I like until the kids are in bed.
He doesn't drink fizzy, eat McDonalds etc.
When he's with his mates, they play fight, do the football thing pretend they have guns sometimes.
As parents, all we can do is set rules and try to bring them up to be responsible adults.
Ultimately, they will make their own choices ...
I personally believe there are more pressing issues which mould the character of our children though. The parents being the main one.
