Do you mean "will it run two CPUs"? If so - then yes and no. Windows XP Home Edition is only enabled for one CPU. The Professional Edition is enabled for either one or two CPUs.

It'll run but wont be any advantage, you want a true multitasking OS.

i think they are 98? 2000 and XP pro.!

SMP-enabled (Symmetric Multi Processing) Windows OSs are...
Windows 2000 (all versions, >= 2 CPUs)
Windows NT (not sure on 2+ CPUs)
Windows XP Pro
Windows.NET Server/2003... yet to be released.
...as they all use (derivaties of) the NT kernel.

Single CPU Windows OSs are...
Windows 95
Windows 98/SE
Windows ME
...these three use derivatives of the DOS kernel. Plus...
Windows XP Home (& probably Media Centre Edition)

Completely personal preference as to what you expect to gain from running a dual cpu rig. Personally, from the 2 dual cpu rigs that I have built so far, they were cool in a geeky kinda of way, but not aaaaaaall that useful tbh. I always found uses for them, but not always necesarilly. You could always pull out the 'Fruitloop' card like P1 Enthusiast and run 2 ganmes at the same time on dual monitor, but heyho.

Sorry for the non tech response, but all typed out and somehow STILL dieing of flu

Cheers,

Nick

For normal desktop usage there's little point in having dual CPUs. Most software can't optimally use them anyway. Just buy a single quick CPU and pocket the change.

That is what I was saying in a roundabout way unless you are really of the 'curious' persuation, as it is pricey at the end of the day for what you get as an end user

Being the er, IT 'curious' sort of chap I bought a dual Slot-1 board off eBay last year and ran a couple of P3-700s in it. Was interesting in a geeky kinda way. No real point, I just use it as a games and file server. Overkill, I know... but it does help the old SETI score tick along nicely.

Sounds like a nice toy you got with that server, Footlong! Please tell me it's doing something better than file-serving . Then again, eh... why not!? I probably don't need U160 in my desktop, but I got it as IDE HDDs just weren't smooth enough. The system just hesitated too often - know what I mean?

As a gesture to normality I'm not running watercooling currently, but it's only a matter of time. It was too high maintenance last time...

...meant to add: fair point about SETI. I don't log on to it as a terminal often, and most of the time don't remember it's running SETI. I'll add Folding back in!

By "on a different level", do you mean that...
- her system was transformed OR
- you're now using chilled water OR
- you're now using a Vapochill
...?

Personally I stopped using the w/c rig as the cylindrical perspex reservoir I was using kept leaking from the barb joints. I'll go back with a machined aluminium res at some point. I, too, loved running w/c. All in good time...

Vapochill? Pah

Too weak for me, especially for the price and poor design, imo.

On this now, but slightly more powerful now and undergoing another transplant currently:

My old server was a Dual Athlon 1400 fully decked out with SCSI 160 etc. God knows what I was thinking, but it was cool at the time.

Forget that Seti malarkey, I put my machines to better use running the United Devices Anti Cancer agent. Pleased to say that I am now the top dog on our Subaru team.

A membership drive is painfully overdue on here again now come to think of it.

Cheers,

Nick

Before I retired her, she was running FTP/web servers, UT/Q3/Serious Sam game servers, United Devices anti cancer agent, firewall/ICS and AV for the house before I altered the WAN setup within the house.

Watercooling? Loved it, gave it to the girlfreind, on a completely different level now

Cheers,

Nick

Typo, again....
